Universities evaluate you holistically — not just grades. Here's what goes into a competitive application profile.

Most competitive universities expect 85–95%+ overall, with strength in subjects relevant to your chosen programme. Predicted grades and Grade 11 transcripts are submitted. IB students: 38+ (top unis), 32+ (mid-tier). CBSE/ICSE: 85–95%+. A-Levels: ABB to A*A*A depending on the university.
Required for all non-native English speakers. IELTS: 6.0–7.5 overall (varies by uni and course). TOEFL iBT: 80–105. Duolingo English Test: increasingly accepted (105–130). Some universities waive this if your school's medium of instruction is English.
US universities: SAT (1200–1550+ competitive range) or ACT (26–35+). Many are now test-optional but strong scores still help. UK: UCAT for Medicine, LNAT for Law, BMAT (some unis). Canada: SAT not required at most universities. Australia: Mostly based on GPA/predicted score.
US/UK universities value depth over breadth — 2–3 meaningful activities are better than 10 shallow ones. Demonstrate initiative, impact, and growth. Founding a club, captaining a team, publishing research, or running a business all count significantly.
UK (UCAS): One 4,000-character personal statement. US (Common App): 650-word main essay + supplemental essays per university. Australia/Canada: usually no essay required, though motivation letters may be needed for scholarships. Your story matters — start thinking about yours now.
US: Typically 2 teacher LORs + 1 school counselor LOR. UK: 1 reference included in UCAS. Canada/Australia: Varies by university, often not required for undergrad. Build strong relationships with teachers now — give them enough time and context to write meaningfully about you.
Oxford & Cambridge conduct academic interviews for shortlisted applicants. US: Some selective colleges invite interviews (Harvard, Yale, Princeton). Medical programmes in UK and Australia almost always require interviews. Canada/Australia: Usually no interviews for undergraduate entry. Prep starts early.
Architecture (UK/US/Australia), Fine Art, Design, Film, and Music programmes typically require a creative portfolio submitted with your application. Some programmes at Parsons, Central Saint Martins, RMIT, and NUS require this. Start building/documenting your creative work now.
